The early photographs, grouped in a series loosely called “Far”, were primarily made with the use of the Nikon FE2. They are images from Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and parts of Europe and Russia. The earliest prints from this series date from 1993, and were often signed but not numbered. Several of these early images made appearances in different forms (matt finish prints, sepia and gold toned prints, straight black and white prints, as well as gloss prints that had been sepia toned). Around the time that I began to use the Rolleiflex camera, I also began to release my photographs in numbered editions of seven or twelve.
“Far” was an attempt to reinvigorate a sense of poetry and, especially, mystery, to the concept of travel in distant places (“distant places” obviously being a relative term). Through this work I sought to regain a feeling of adventure and discovery in an ever shrinking, homogenized, and globalized world.
