Living in India for the better part of eight years has led to both joyous adventure and cultural mishap. Beginning shortly after the monsoon of 2003, I began to do collaborative work with various Indian artists. This work expresses some of my personal feelings in a manner impossible to capture by photography. My primary collaborator in these ongoing autobiographical paintings has been Rakesh Vijay, a talented miniaturist who lives in Udaipur.
The miniatures are made with a combination of mineral and vegetable pigments. The paper used is traditional Indian wasli. When complete, Udaipur craftsman Shankar Kumawat paints an intricate border with powdered gold, using gum arabic as a binder.
